Projects

Project 1: A Company of Rifles: Betan’s Adventures in Branna. Novel-length fantasy manuscript (94,000 words). A princess, the company of soldiers she commands, and the guns they fire. Yes, GUNS. It’s a completed project and queries have been rejected by dozens of literary agents. I need to take a hard look at my query and start looking at submissions to publishers.

Project 2: novel-length science fiction manuscript. It’s a mess. I put it on the backburner for now because it got depressing just to look at. I sometimes have trouble remembering what this was. Then I do and I feel very sad about it.

Project 3: novel-length science fiction manuscript. Same setting as Project 2. A small spaceship that carries passengers and freight and occasionally steals things. Hopefully not a blatant Firefly ripoff.

Project 4: The Difficulty of Conjuring Cash. Modern fantasy short story (7,400 words). Guys learn magic as teenagers, grow up to use it for crime. Going through submissions.

Project 5: The Ugly Life. A screenplay, funny romantic drama I guess? It’s not an outright comedy. I started it in the screenwriting class I took at PCC. I’ve submitted it a few times to the Nicholl Felloship and got nowhere. Now that I’m learning about screenplay structure I can see this is a troubled project. It probably needs to be a more obvious comedy or a more obvious drama, and I’m not much of a joke writer, so….

Project 6: War Geeks, my 2012 Nicholl Fellowship submission. I originally thought it would be a Pegg/Wright war movie but as I wrote it I realized that Grosse Pointe Blank style black comedy was much more what I was doing.

Project 7: Near future stuff, not a priority but it’s something that won’t leave me alone. It’s presenting as a script right now but will probably turn into prose, or maybe comic.

Project 8: My next project, which I need to come up with a better working title for. The present one gives away the inspiration too much. Yet another story set Outward, which is what I call the science fiction universe I mostly work with.

Project 9: Still more Outward. Used to be working title Space Heist but I recently came up with a much less unwieldy take on it that conveniently used up an orphaned story hook I had. Still the plot is complicated and I don’t want it to end up like Project 2.
